Summer Activities on Lake Miltona: The Complete Guide
Everything to do on and around Lake Miltona in summer — from pontoon cruises and sandbar swimming to paddleboarding, fishing, and evening campfires. Plan your perfect week.
Lake Miltona is one of central Minnesota's finest summer lakes — 5,639 acres of clear water, excellent walleye and bass fishing, and a character all its own. Whether you're spending three days or a full week at Legendary Log Cabin, here's everything you can do without running out of options.
On the Water
Pontoon Cruising
The 25-foot pontoon available at Legendary Log Cabin is the centerpiece of most stays. Morning coffee cruise to watch the loons, afternoon run to the north bay, sunset cruise with a drink — the lake is calm enough for all three. Lake Miltona has a public landing if you want to explore by powerboat too, but having the pontoon already at the dock saves 2+ hours of logistics every single day.
Sandbar Swimming
Lake Miltona has several famous sandbars that emerge in summer — shallow, sandy flats where the water is knee-deep and crystal clear. A 15-minute pontoon ride gets you there. Pack a cooler, a volleyball, and an afternoon.
Paddleboarding and Kayaking
Legendary Log Cabin comes with kayaks and a paddleboard. The protected cove in front of the cabin is perfect for beginners; the main lake channel is excellent for longer paddling routes. Early morning, before the boat traffic starts, is the best time — the water is glass.
Fishing
Lake Miltona is known for excellent walleye, northern pike, largemouth bass, and panfish. Dawn and dusk are the prime windows; the weedy flats on the west shore and the rocky points on the north bay are the known producers. See our full fishing guide for Lake Miltona for spot details and tips.
Swimming
The private sandy beach at Legendary Log Cabin has a shallow, gradual entry with a hard sandy bottom — ideal for all ages. The water is typically warm enough to swim comfortably by late June and stays that way through August.
On Land
Campfire Nights
The fire pit at the cabin is set back from the beach with Adirondack chairs and a view of the water. August evenings cool off enough for a proper campfire. S'mores, guitars, and a lake full of stars.
The Upper Deck
The upper deck looks straight out across the lake and is the best place on the property for morning coffee, afternoon books, or evening dinners outside. The umbrella-covered dining table seats 8.
Biking the Central Lakes Trail
The Central Lakes Trail runs 55 miles between Fergus Falls and Osakis, passing through Alexandria. It's paved, flat, and runs along restored wetlands — accessible from Alexandria and worth a half-day ride.
Carlos Creek Winery
One of Minnesota's most acclaimed wineries is 20 minutes from the cabin. Carlos Creek Winery has a beautiful outdoor patio, live music on summer weekends, and a gift shop. It's a genuine destination, not a roadside tasting room.
Alexandria Dining
Alexandria's dining scene is better than most visitors expect. Pike & Pint Grill is excellent for fresh walleye. La Ferme is a farm-to-table standout. The Traveler's Inn diner is the classic small-town Saturday morning breakfast. For a full restaurant guide, read our Alexandria MN restaurant guide.
Lake Carlos State Park
Fifteen minutes from the cabin, Lake Carlos State Park has excellent hiking trails (5+ miles of trails through hardwood forest), a swimming beach, and a family campground. The lake itself is beautiful and less busy than the more commercial lakes nearby.
Planning Your Days
A good rhythm for a Lake Miltona summer week:
- Morning: Coffee on the deck, paddleboarding on a calm lake, breakfast on the upper deck
- Late morning: Beach time, kids in the water, fishing from the dock
- Afternoon: Pontoon cruise to the sandbars, swimming, afternoon nap
- Late afternoon: Explore Alexandria, wine tasting at Carlos Creek, or biking the trail
- Evening: Dinner on the deck or at a local restaurant, campfire, sunset from the water
