Direct Booking vs Airbnb Fees: How Much Do You Save?

How online travel agency service fees work, and how booking the Legendary Log Cabin direct compares to booking on Airbnb or VRBO. Complements our book-direct page.

Booking direct almost always costs less than booking the same cabin on Airbnb or VRBO — and the reason is the service fee. This guide explains how those fees work in plain English and how direct booking compares. For an interactive savings calculator and the full case for booking direct, see our book direct page.

How Online Travel Agency Fees Work

When you book on Airbnb or VRBO, the platform adds a guest service fee on top of the host's rate at checkout. On Airbnb this is commonly in the range of 14–16% of the booking subtotal; VRBO charges a similar guest fee. That percentage goes to the platform for using its marketplace — it is not part of what the host charges for the cabin.

The cabin rate itself is the same; the difference in your total is essentially the platform fee. On a multi-night summer stay, that fee can add up to a meaningful amount — which is exactly what you keep by booking direct.
